Chief green thumb

As Chief Green Thumb of Flower Farm Studios I get to play in the soil whenever I damn well please.

I’ve spent the past eight years running my own nonprofit, Good Worx Inc., and overseeing a community growing project that I created in the spring of 2015 called The Sunny Patch Project. I started The Sunny Patch Project as a way to raise awareness about food insecurity in our community.

I felt that by creating community growing spaces for some of our at-risk neighbors that we’d have an opportunity to truly engage neighbors in better understanding our food system and how it impacts us all.

To date we’ve grown and shared nearly five tons of garden fresh vegetables, herbs and fruits with many of our at-risk neighbors and local food pantry partners. We’ve also redirected and rescued another 16 tons of food waste.

We’ve accomplished most of this work during six of the most extreme weather seasons and I’m arriving at the reality that food production should be left to the farmers.

I believe that my impact, moving forward, may be greater in working with others to establish unique growing spaces - preferably a mix of pollinator plants and edibles. If I can weave in some walking onions in an installation - even better! If you’re not composting yet, you will be when I’m done with you! And if you’ve never considered donating your excess garden yields, well I’ll be happy to hook you up with your nearest food pantry!
